Shimshak, Porter, Edstrom take state honors
by Cynthya Porter - Winona Post

The Winona Post brought home a bundle of awards from the Minnesota Free Paper Association (MFPA) after the annual convention and awards banquet in Bloomington recently.

Graphic Artist Jeremiah Shimshak got high praise from judges, earning a first place and two second place awards for ads created for local clients.

Shimshak’s first place award was in the category of Best Web Site Promotion for an ad for the Winona Post web site. Judges called the ad clean and professional, praising its ability to draw readers into the message and build the Post’s on-line readership.

One of Shimshak’s second place awards was in the category Best Auto Ad for a full-color ad created for Walz Buick. Judges liked the way Shimshak incorporated a March Madness theme into the ad using vivid colors and graphics, saying, “This ad is sure to get attention.” Judges also praised the pressman who produced the ad, noting the fine detail preserved in the printing process.

Shimshak’s other second place award was for Best Black and White Small Space Ad, given for a 2X2 ad created by Shimshak for GOM Computers. Judges gave Shimshak high marks for creativity and effective use of space to get the customer’s message across.

The MFPA Newspaper contest is judged by newspaper industry experts from newspapers around the Midwest as well as professors from Mankato State University.

The Winona Post competed for its awards against free circulation papers of all sizes from across both the Twin Cities area and rural Minnesota.
